Taxonomic revision and typification of Jurassic plants collected and studied by Wieland (1914) in the region of El Consuelo, Oaxaca
Main Article Content
Abstract
This publication consists of the revision of an abundant and well preserved flora. This flora was collected in the region known as El Consuelo, located in the Mixteca Alta, State of Oaxaca, Mexico, and studied by Wieland in 1914. The purpose of this revision was multiple. From the observation of the material and the illustrations of the monograph (Wieland, 1914-1916), it is evident that Wieland applied a strict monotypic criterion. It was necessary, taking as basis a critical analysis of the material, to define which are the valid species and the names that would be assigned as synonyms. At the same time, the typical specimens of well identified species were selected. Another objective of the study was the updating of the taxonomy, using the pertinent modern studies and to establish with certainty the flora's age. For the last of these goals, the stratigraphic studies of recent years in this region were considered as well as recently made plant collections.
Wieland's 53 species were reduced to 26, which are described and illustrated, using the original illustrations of Wieland (1914-1916). The flora consists of several genera of ferns (Piazopteris, Phlebopteris, Gonatosorus, Cladophlebis and Coniopteris), cycadophytes (Zamites, Otozamites, Ptilophyllum, Pterophyllum, Anomozamites, Taeniopteris, Cycadolepis, Williamsonia and Perezlaria), coniferophytes (Noeggerathiopsis, Pelourdia) and the new genus Mexiglossa of uncertain taxonomic position.
