Abstract

The Burgos Basin in northeast Mexico has few published geological information. Surface date are known from various sporadic publications and geological-mining maps at scales 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 prepared by the Mexican Geological Service, the outcrops in this region are scattered and the size is small. The subsurface is restricted and it is known for contributions that Petróleos Mexicanos allowed to be divulged. The stratigraphy, sedimentary and structural models of this basin have been extrapolated from Texas, or there are few stratigraphic and sedimentological studies that serve as analogue references to know sedimentary models for prospection of coal, uranium, water underground, gas reservoirs or for academic purposes. For the first time in the Burgos Basin, 87Sr/86Sr isotopes are used to obtain a chronological age for the lower Jackson Formation. This stratigraphic interval includes the ostreid Crassostrea cf. alabamiensis reported for first time in this basin; from the well-preserved shell of this mollusk a sample was obtained for the Sr analysis. The stratigraphic and paleontological data in the studied section suggest interpreting a succession of bar, lagoon and fluvio-lacustrine sub-environments for a coastline, dominated by waves and tides, in a transgressive system tract, which the age is included in the Priabonian (Upper Eocene) stage.
