Founded in 1955 by emeritus Dr. Gloria Alencaster Ybarra from the Geology Institute, UNAM, Paleontología Mexicana is a journal keen on the publication of palaeontological studies of Mexico, and other related regions such as North America, Latin America, and Europe, amongst others. The journal is aimed at researchers, academics, museologists, students, and people with an interest in palaeontology from these regions of the world.

Paleontología Mexicana is interested in original manuscripts about palaeontology of the aforementioned regions, especially Mexico. It is in the journal’s interest to include topics such as systematics, phylogeny, evolution, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleogeography, and taphonomy, covering all taxonomy groups (e.g., invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, microfossils and ichnofossils). Texts related to molecular evolution, prebiotic systems and astrobiology are also accepted as long as there is a fossil record associated with the research.

The main objective of the journal is to publish original research articles that present the fossil record of Mexico. Short notes, historical reviews of palaeontology of Mexico, thesis results duly synthesized and adapted to the format of a research article, and international fossil record articles are also accepted. We also work on special publications like the publication of abstracts from national conferences related to palaeontology. Manuscripts may be submitted both in English and Spanish. The publication of the journal will be exclusively online, open access and biannual (July and December). Exceptions will be made with congresses’ memoirs, which will be published according to the needs of paleontological congresses.

Types of articles accepted

Apart from research articles, Paleontología Mexicana publishes the following contributions:

  •     Special Invitation Articles. Specialized focus reviews written for a well-informed audience. Special invitation papers are generally requested by the editor-in-chief; manuscripts of this type go through the usual review process. The special benefits of a special invitation article include: rapid publication, no page charge, and a one-year membership to Paleontología Mexicana. The introduction should succinctly explain why your work is of interest to the general biological community.
  •     Rapid Communications. These are brief papers, usually 2 to 5 pages long, that report new conclusions that do not fit in the standards of the common titles, or that provide commentaries, corrections, criticism or alternative interpretations of results presented in published papers. “Opinion” articles that are not based on new data or a reanalysis of published data will not be acceptable. The rapid communications are revised frequently, and their publication will be expeditious. The membership and page charge requirements are not expendable.
  •     Invited Commentaries. All invited commentaries are put together with the work that is going to be published. Usually, this happens at the suggestion of an Associate Editor or Editor-in-Chief. These 3-to-5-pages articles discuss the contributions and importance of the research work, regarding its acceptance of the emergence of paradigms on the subject. Membership and page charge requirements are expendable.
  •     Book Reviews. All book reviews are by invitation, and its publication is expeditious. Membership and page charge requirements are expendable.
  •     Genre Reviews. These are papers that report changes and adjustments in the systematics and taxonomy of the current taxa and fossils.
