Intraspecific variation in Parathyridina Mexicana N. Sp., a Terebratulid from the Oxfordian of Mexico

Abstract

In the present work, a population of Terebratulids from Mexico’s Oxfordian, whose external characters show a great polymorphism, was investigated. The statistical evaluation of the measurements of the shell and the shape of the frontal commissure show that all the individuals belong to a single species and their morphological differences correspond to an intense intraspecific variation. This species has been described as Parathyridina mexicana n. sp., with 3 subspecies related through intermediate types, which present two, three or four creases in the frontal commissure as their main characteristic, which is why they are designated as biplicata, triplicata and quadriplicata subspecies respectively. It is also addressed the probable line of variation in each group, as well as the growth trends, taking into account the statistical data in the latter case.
