Abstract

The large foraminifera of Cuba’s Campanian and Maastrichtian are studied from a systematic and biostratigraphic point of view, indicating both the formations and the ages in which they appear while outlining a biostratigraphic zonation based on these microfossils.

Some paleoecological considerations are also made, considering the faunal assemblages that occur in each case.

Within this study, which could be considered preliminary, special emphasis is placed on the foraminifera of the superfamily Orbitoidoidea Schwager, 1876, pointing out their fundamental morphological characteristics, as well as the bases for their classification. In the systematic study, large foraminifera species are mentioned and illustrated, corresponding to the genera Aktinorbitoides Brönnimann, 1948; Asterorbis Vaughan y Cole, 1937; Ayalaina Seiglie, 1960; "Borelis" Montfort, 1808; Conorbitoides Brönnimann, 1958; Cternorbitoides  Brönnimann, 1958; "Historbitoides"  Brönnimann, 1956; Lepidorbitoides Silvestri, 1907; Monolepidorbis Astre, 1927; Omphalocyclus Bronn, 1951-1952; Orbitoides d'Orbigny, 1847; Pseudorbitoides Douvillé, 1922; Rhabdorbitoides,  Brönnimann, 1955; Rhapydionina Stache, 1912, Siderolites Lamarck, 1801; Smoutina Drooger, 1960; Sulcoperculina Thalmann, 1938, and Vaughanina Palmer, 1934; among them, three species and two new subspecies are described:  Sulcoperculina minima sp. nov.; Orbitoides villasensis sp. nov., Vaughanina cubensis minor subsp. nov. and Vaughanina cubensis globosa subsp. nov.

Accompanying the text, there is a table with the proposed biostratigraphic zonation and with the distribution of the species through the biozones; there are also some character connection graphs, and 43 sheets illustrating the species.
