First report of Mariella bergeri (Brongniart, 1822) for the Upper Albiano of Mexico in the mine “La Negra”, municipality of Pacula, State of Hidalgo, Mexico
Main Article Content
Abstract
Mariella bergeri (Brongniart, 1822) is reported based on the study of a specimen from a private collection, originally from the “La Negra” phosphate rock mine, located in the municipality of Pacula, state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The collector kindly granted us access to the specimen, allowing the acquisition of photographs, a cast, and a 3D model (a virtual fossil). Based on the available graphic and three-dimensional material, the ammonite was identified at the species level through detailed observation of its morphological features. In this study, the heteromorph ammonite species Mariella bergeri is formally recorded for the first time in Mexico, contributing to the knowledge of Upper Albian ammonite faunas in the country through the addition of this semi-cosmopolitan taxon. The finding has significant biostratigraphic implications, as the known age range of this species coincides with that previously reported for the El Doctor Formation, the lithostratigraphic unit in which the studied specimen was found. The identification of this species refines the age assignment of the studied sedimentary sequence, placing it within the Upper Albian.
