Stomiosphaera cardiiformis sp. nov. of the Upper Cretaceous of Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
Stomiosphaera cardiiformis sp. nov. is described and illustrated, a microfossil "Incertae sedis" from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian-Maastrichtian), from sediments of Las Villas province, Republic of Cuba. The finding of this new species in rocks younger than the Turonian, extends the stratigraphic distribution of the genus, since Bonet (1956, p. 61-63) and Bonet and Trejo (1958), place it from Albian to Turonian. The sediments in which it appears in Cuba have a well-defined age, since some genera of large foraminifera well known from the stratigraphic point of view were found associated with the new species, such as Sucoperculina, Gavelinella, Vaughaniana, Asterorbis and Orbitoides.
The taxonomic position of the genus and the remarkable homeomorphism between Stomiosphaera cardiiformis sp. nov. and the embryonic apparatus of Asterorbis aguayoi Palmer are discussed.
