Upper Triassic stratigraphy of the central part of the State of Sonora
Main Article Content
Abstract
Since the beginning of the present century, the lower Mesozoic sediments in the central part of the State of Sonora have been referred to the "Barranca Division", and later to the "Barranca Formation", both considered stratigraphic units of Rhaetian-Liassic age. Recent geological studies have provided sufficient fossil material and stratigraphic data to elevate the "Barranca Formation" to the rank of Group, which comprises three lithostratigraphic units: the Arrayanes Formation in the lower part, the Santa Clara Formation in the middle part and the Coyotes Formation in the upper part. Of these three formations, only the Santa Clara Formation has provided fossils, which are of Carnian age (Upper Triassic). These three formations were accumulated in the San Marcial Basin, a sedimentary basin that existed at the end of the Late Triassic and had marine connection with the Antimony Paleobahia only during the Carnic. Sparse stratigraphic and paleontological evidence indicates that the San Marcial Basin ceased to be a sedimentary basin at the end of the Triassic. A synthetic evaluation of the stratigraphy of the Upper Triassic of the State of Sonora is also presented, indicating the relationships between these sediments in this entity.
