Presence of Enchodus (Osteichthyes: Aulopiformes: Enchodontidae) in the Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of Chiapas, Mexico
Main Article Content
Abstract
We report for the first time Enchodus petrosus, E. ferox and E. gladiolus (Osteichthyes: Aulopiformes: Enchodontidae) from Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of Mexico, based on isolated palatine teeth from two localities within Ocozocoautla Formation, Chiapas. The presence of these species, in association with previously reported Pachyrhizodus sp., Squalicorax pristodontus, S. kaupi, Carcharias sp., Cretoxyrhina mantelli and Serratolamna serrata, allow correlate of Ocozocoautla Formation with localities in North and South America. That allow us to hypothesize that the southern paleobiogeographic subprovince (warm subprovince) within the Western Interior Seaway extended to South America in the Maastrichtian, maybe as a result of increased global temperatures during the latest Cretaceous.
