Abstract

Sierra Fernando range was review with a geological, stratigraphic and paleontological aspect as part of the study at several locations in east-central portion of the State of Chihuahua. Ooutcrops show predominantly four units (La Virgen, Cupido, La Peña and Coyame) that integrate Cuchillo Fm. The thickness of this formation is 1.246 m in Sierra Fernando. It describes the most outstanding fossils from La Peña Fm. and the Coyame Fm. microfossils of Late Aptian-Early Albian age. Specimens are from oysters group as Exogyra quitmanensis, Amphidonte obliquata, Gryphaea sp. and Aetostreon latissimum, besides some ammonites as Kazanskyella aff. arizonica. Coyame Fm. contains microfossils as calpionellids Colomiella mexicana Bonet and C. recta Bonet; planktonic foraminifera as Hedbergella (Favusella) washitensis Carsey, Ticinella bejaouaensis Sigal; calcispherulids as Calcisphaerula innominata Bonet, Stomiosphaera sphaerica Kaufman, Pithonella ovalis Kaufman, P. trejoi (Bonet) and nanoplankton as Nannoconus minutus Bronnimann.
