Abstract

The inquiries about rudists in the Caribbean and their continental margins have their antecedents toward the XIX century. The Dr. Gloria Alencáster’s contributions on the rudists from Mexico, since the 70’ years of the XX century, include direct and undirect information about this fossil group in Cuba. This Mexican paleontologist carried up a wide investigative work, whose results have constituted a firm basement for the development of Caribbean and Antillean bioestratigraphy. The present work shows social and scientific influence, of this distinguished mexican teacher and investigator, on the rudist study in Cuba; and her incidence as social being, in the author’s academic formation, as a clear manifestation of her prolific formacional performance, paleontologist of the Institute of Geology, simbol of the prominent Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM). The scientific culture, on regional and universal scale, has gotten rich with her work, with real and potential repercussion in several spheres of the human development, such as: the scientific research, the education and the paleontological patrimony. Such values, is the author’s immortal legacy, so do the Mexican Science, to the humanity’s progress.
