Abstract

Throughout the second half of the 20th century, Dr. Gloria Alencáster Ybarra has been an important bastion in the advancement of Earth Sciences in our country. She was born in Mexico City in the bosom of a small and loving family formed by Agustín Alencáster and María de Jesús Ybarra, and by her two beloved sisters Perla and Artemisa. Undoubtedly, the uprightness and honesty of her parents, their high sense of responsibility in all aspects of life, their admiration for science, culture and music, and the attributes transmitted to their daughters in daily after-dinner conversations, forged her spirit. Her childhood and adolescence were spent in the center of the city at that time, very different from today.
