Abstract

A morphological study was carried out with the carapace of each member of the genus Notoemys. The aim of this study is to present the anatomical variations observed in the plates and in the scutes in the corns of the carapace and plastron on each species; to update the information of this taxon of fossil turtles; and generate a document in which it found all the morphological descriptions of the Notoemys members. The distribution of this fossil turtles were only in America, and the stratigraphic reach of this genus was from Late Jurassic (Oxfordian) to Early Cretaceous (Valanginian). In most of the members of this genus the shell is well preserved in the fossil record, and only few specimens have skull or axial elements. The use of the shells in this morphological study is adequate because they have the morphological and diagnostic characteristics that define this turtle genus. With the recent discovery and description of a new species of this genus for the Late Jurassic of Mexico the diversity of this group of turtles increases, in addition to expanding the distribution of Notoemys in America.
