Restos de tortuga en el Cretácico Superior (Maastrichtiano) de Chiapas amplían el registro geológico y geográfico de este taxón en México

Las tortugas son miembros importantes de los conjuntos de vertebrados del Cretácico Superior en toda América del Norte y se consideran una herramienta útil para definir patrones biogeográficos. En México, se conocen fragmentos fósiles de caparazones de tortuga de varias formaciones del Cretácico Superior, entre ellas El Gallo, Baja California; Corral de Enmedio y Packard Shale, Sonora; Aguja y San Carlos, Chihuahua; y Aguja, Cañón del Tule y Cerro del Pueblo, Coahuila. En este estudio, describimos formalmente restos de tortugas de la Formación Ocozocoautla (Maastrichtiano, Cretácico Superior) en el estado de Chiapas, sur de México. Los especímenes de tortuga son referidos a Testudine indeterminado y Pleurodira indeterminado. Estos especímenes representan el registro más austral dentro del Cretácico Superior de México. El conocimiento sobre la riqueza de tortugas del Cretácico en México ha aumentado con nuevos restos provenientes de Chiapas. Estos ejemplares son importantes porque constituyen el segundo reporte formal de tortugas en el Maastrichtiano de México.
